WHAT IS THE CHALLENGER DEEP?

The Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in the Earth´s seabed hydrosphere, with a depth of 10,898 to 10,916 m by direct measurement from submersibles. It is in the Pacific Ocean, near the Mariana Islands group. The Challenger Deep is a relatively small slot-shaped depression in the bottom of a considerably larger crescent-shaped occeanic trench which itself is an unusually deep feature in the ocean floor. It is located in the ocean territory of the Federated States of Micronesia, 1.6 km from its border with ocean territory associated with Guam.
